Topic
Compared to wind and solar, energy from tides is more predictable. This predictability is useful for the efficient and reliable operation of the electrical grid. However, the drawback with tidal energy is its high levelized cost of energy (LCOE). This is true even if tidal energy is harnessed through tidal turbines, which are less expensive and also have less impact on marine life, than tidal dams.
One of the main reasons for high LCOE is that maintenance costs are extremely high for tidal turbines which are submerged in the sea. These costs can be reduced by designing robust systems which are less failure prone or have fewer failure modes. In this talk, I will talk about the essential electrical subsystems in the tidal turbine system, and how these electrical systems can be made more robust.
