Specialist Marine Engineering Power, Propulsion and Energy systems
Model Based Systems Engineering and Design of Power, Propulsion and Energy systems
MARIN applies Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) for design of the Power, Propulsion and Energy (PPE) systems of ships. MBSE is an improved method of System Engineering. It puts the design results in a data repository using computer models. MARIN uses ARCADIA Capella for MBSE. Capella applies the MBSE method of ARCADIA in a software package with a standardized Way-of-Work, a standardized set of diagrams and symbols, and a repository of models and data. The MBSE method is multi-disciplinary. MARIN inserted two domain specific steps. The first one is Ship Power and Energy Concept (SPEC), with which we select a feasible technology. The second one is setting up a General Arrangement Plan (GAP), in which the building groups of the PPE system are positioned.
Verification of capabilities and requirements of a technical design is an essential part of Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE). MARIN Marine Power Systems Team does exploration, concept design and verification of Power, Propulsion and Energy (PPE) systems of ships.
For performing the verifications MARIN develops a virtual (numerical) Zero Emission Laboratory (v-ZEL). For scaled validation and demonstration of the v-ZEL outcomes a physical Zero Emission Laboratory (ZEL) is being built as well. One of the v-ZEL model configurations acts as the ‘digital Twin’ of the ZEL. Both ZEL’s are often referred to as ‘Engine room of the future’. Both ZEL’s are intensely connected. The physical ZEL uses Software-in-the-Loop solutions for driving emulated power components. Those software solutions also run in the v-ZEL.
For performing the MBSE the Marine Power Systems Team contains of two technical disciplines, which have close collaboration. The systems engineering part and the naval architecture part. The specialists system engineering cover the technical disciplines marine mechanical/process engineering, electrical engineering, and control and automation. The specialists naval architecture cover the part naval architecture of the power, propulsion and energy systems. In the above shown process flow the technical disciplines are divided as follows:

What are you going to do?
For performing the systems engineering part of the projects, MARIN is looking for a professional (high educated and experienced) marine engineer, specialised in power, propulsion and energy systems e.g. bunker and machinery building groups. Furthermore, this role consist of:
- Plan, organise and perform the marine systems engineering part of customer projects concerning Power, Propulsion and Energy systems for ships
- Plan, organise and perform the marine systems engineering part of R&D projects concerning Power, Propulsion and Energy systems for ships
- Analyse operations and perform multi-disciplinary concept design, technical calculations and modelling of Power, Propulsion and Energy systems for ships
- Prepare and support modelling and testing of Power, Propulsion and Energy systems in the virtual Zero Emission Laboratory (v-ZEL) and the physical Zero Emission Laboratory (ZEL)
- Set up specifications and configurations for additional modelling and tests of Research and Development projects, model validation projects and verification of customer applications in v-ZEL
- Perform application and management (in Dutch ‘Beheer’) of Capella models for MBSE of Ship Power, Propulsion and Energy systems
- Co-operate with the specialists naval architecture in design and development projects, following the MBSE methodAct as liaison between the Marine Power Systems team and the ZEL related disciplines within MARIN
Who are we looking for?
A passionate candidate with a master degree in (Marine) Electrical or Mechanical Engineering. You are experienced in design and testing of Power systems. You also have in-depth knowledge of Power systems. Knowledge of marine PPE systems is an advantage. You are a team player who likes to take initiatives for improvements. You should also have a good command of the English language and be willing to learn Dutch, if that is not your mother language. Experience with a MBSE tool and with Matlab Simulink is a must. Experience with programming in C#, C++ and/or Python is a plus.
What do we offer?
- A challenging, independent and varied position in an ambitious organization.
- Possibility in hybrid working.
- A profit-based pay adjustments up to a maximum of 15% of the gross annual salary.
- 29 leave days at a fulltime employment.
- Standard leave between Christmas and New Year's Eve.
- Plenty of opportunities to develop yourself.
