Unigas International is a well-reputed international shipping company focused on the carriage of liquefied gases on a worldwide basis. Founded in 1969 and supported by long-established family-owned maritime groups, Unigas is a key service provider to the world’s Energy and Chemical Majors, as well as leading Trading Houses across the globe. The Unigas fleet currently consists of 30 vessels and is operated out of offices in Rotterdam, Houston and Hong Kong.
To support our inhouse Fleet Performance Department in Rotterdam, we are seeking to employ a
Fleet Performance Student Assistant (0.4-0.6 FTE)

In this exciting position as Fleet Performance Student Assistant you report to the Innovation & Optimization Manager and work closely together with our Fleet Performance Engineers.
This is an important role for an active, analytical and persistent student who wants to develop innovative performance improvement solutions, vessel data handling and onboard best practices. Your core objective is to ensure that the Unigas Fleet Performance Team gains more insight through improved data quality, data quantity, accurate benchmarking and thorough evaluation. This requires an ability to effectively interact and cooperate with various colleagues across the departments.
As a Fleet Performance Student Assistant, you will be primarily tasked with the following responsibilities:
- Initiate data collection trials for various topics across the full Fleet Performance spectrum. We are happy to tell you more about this during the interview
- Support the Fleet Performance Engineers by acting as sparring partner, sound board and first user within the team
- Building dashboards and analysing tools for existing raw data. At the same time also work on running projects by improving tools and date visualisation
- Structurally analyse vessel, vessel class and fleet-wide performance with a focus on fuel consumption, emission reduction, cargo plant operations, route selection, etc.
- Provide (daily) recommendations and be part of the in-house knowledge base for continuous vessel & voyage improvements
Experience/Qualifications:
- You study a (Master's) degree in Marine/Mechanical Engineering, Data Science, Aerospace engineering or similar
- You are analytically strong, accurate, a self-starter with a strong drive and a highly motivated team player
- Expert knowledge of Excel (incl. VBA) is required and Python or PowerBI would be a great bonus
- Experience with data handling, database management & some coding would be great
- Interest in commercial (gas)shipping is a bonus
Your profile
- We are looking for the right person and are willing to consider the total candidate rather than set limits for experience, study years, etc.
- "Hands-on" and you know when to apply a quick fix and when to drill down into the details
- Independent and decisive as well as being a strong team player. Here your interpersonal skills can be applied and refined. Good communication skills, in both oral and written English are a must (Dutch is a plus)
- You are organized, communicative and have a willingness to learn
- You are structured, analytical and responsible
- Available for 16-24 hours per week, however we are flexible and are accommodating around your schedule with exams

We offer a flexible, part-time position in a dynamic, commercial environment. Unigas Fleet Performance team is a young team, currently consisting of two Fleet Performance Engineers. Our communication lines are short and informal, allowing you to quickly add value to the team and business. Our new office is in the heart of Rotterdam being next to Metro Beurs. Here you will have a magnificent view from the 19th floor. We are offering primary benefits commensurate to the position, your education and experience. This includes 14 months’ salary, fully paid pension scheme, discretionary bonus arrangement and full travel allowance. Secondary benefits include 26 vacation days (basis full time employment) and the required company tools such as a company laptop & phone.
